(국영문 동시배포) 세종대왕과 ‘시각장애인들의 세종대왕’이 만나다

국가유산청 궁능유적본부 세종대왕유적관리소(소장 이재원)는 오는 5월 15일부터 7월 19일까지 세종대왕역사문화관(경기 여주시)에서 ‘한글 점자 훈맹정음 반포'(1926년) 100주년을 기념한 특별전시 「훈민정음과 훈맹정음」을 개최한다. 이번 전시는 시각장애인의 자립과 재활을 지원하는 사단법인 복지네트워크협의회 유어웨이(대표이사 나종천)와의 협업으로 진행된다. 이번 전시는 훈민정음에 깃든 세종대왕의 ‘인간에 대한 믿음과 사랑’이 일제강점기 우리의 말이 부정되던 1926년에 박두성(朴斗星, 1888~1963)에 의해 반포된 한글 점자 ‘훈맹정음(訓盲正音)’으로 이어진다는 역사적 의미를 조명하는 자리이다. * 박두성과 훈맹정음 : 박두성은 1888년 인천시 강화군 교동면에서 태어나 1913년에서 1936년까지 조선총독부 설립 제생원(濟生院)에서 교원으로 맹인 학생들을 가르쳤다. 박두성은 맹인 학생들이 모국어(조선어)를 읽고 쓰게 하기 위해서 비밀리에 제자들과 함께 한글 점자를 연구하고, 1926년 11월 4일 6점식 한글 점자 ‘훈맹정음’을 반포하였다. 전시공간은 ‘문맹의 벽을 깨다: 훈민정음’과 ‘장애의 벽을 깨다: 훈맹정음’으로 나뉜다. 먼저, 훈민정음 구역에는 ▲ 세종대왕이 글을 읽지 못하는 백성을 위해 그림을 그려 넣은 《삼강행실도(三綱行實圖)》, ▲ 훈민정음 언해가 실려 있는《월인석보(月印釋譜)》가 전시된다. 훈맹정음 구역에는 ▲ 박두성이 창안한 《훈맹정음 점자표》, ▲ 1926년 8월 12일부터 1954년까지 직접 쓴 《일지(日誌)》, ▲ 직접 제작한 점자 아연 원판, ▲ 직접 사용한 점자타자기 등 박두성의 유품들이 전시되고, 자석 점자로 이름을 써보는 체험공간도 마련된다. * 언해: 한문을 한글로 풀이하는 것 또는 그 책 이와 함께, 이번 전시에서는 사단법인 복지네트워크협의회 유어웨이가 전시 개막일인 5월 15일 오전 10시부터 오후 4시까지 세종대왕역사문화관 앞 잔디밭 광장에서 시각장애인 인식 개선 체험행사 ‘오감으로 느끼는 장벽 없는 세상’을 진행한다. ▲ 특수 안경을 착용하고 일상생활 속에서의 시각장애에 대한 이해를 높이는 체험활동과, ▲ 안대를 쓰고 미술품을 만드는 ‘어둠 속의 촉각 미술’ 등이 준비되며, ▲ 시각장애인 작가들의 사진·그림 전시회도 함께 연다. 또한 오후 2시부터 3시 30분까지 세종대왕역사문화관 영상실에서 ▲ 기념 강연회 ‘인문학으로 읽는 점자’ 가 열린다. 전시는 기간 내 세종대왕역사문화관을 방문하는 관람객이라면 누구나 무료로 관람할 수 있다. 관람시간은 5월에는 오전 9시부터 오후 6시까지이며, 6월과 7월에는 오전 9시부터 오후 6시 30분까지다. 단, 월요일은 휴관일이다. 관람객이 많은 토요일과 일요일에 방문하는 시각장애인 관람객이라면 누구나 전시실에 상주한 현장영상해설사에게 해설을 요청할 수 있고, 모든 전시내용은 영어로도 번역하여 외국인 관람객의 편의성도 높였다. 이와 함께, 이번 전시에는 조립하여 재사용할 수 있는 ‘블록형 재활용 벽체’를 사용하여 전시폐기물을 80% 이상 줄인 친환경적 의미도 더했다. 이번 전시는 유물 대여 등을 위해 인천광역시 시각장애인복지연합회가 운영하는 송암점자도서관과 국립한글박물관, 서울대학교 규장각한국학연구원 및 중앙도서관, 서울국립맹학교 등의 협조로 진행된다. 궁능유적본부 세종대왕유적관리소는 앞으로도 다양한 협력체계를 통해 역사와 문화, 그리고 예술을 결합한 고품격의 세종대왕 관련 국가유산 활용 프로그램을 선보이는 적극행정을 통해 더욱 많은 국민들과 세종대왕의 사상과 업적을 나누고자 한다.The Historic Site of King Sejong Management Office (Director Yi Jae-won) of the Korea Heritage Service Royal Palaces and Tombs Center will hold the special exhibition “Hangeul and Korean Braille” at the History and Culture Museum of King Sejong in Yeoju, Gyeonggi-do from May 15 to July 19, 2026. The exhibition commemorates the centenary of the promulgation of Hunmaengjeongeum, the Korean Braille system. It is organized in collaboration with Your Way (CEO Na Jong-cheon), a corporation that advocates for the independence and rehabilitation of people with visual impairments.This exhibition juxtaposes King Sejong’s (r. 1418–1450) invention of Hangeul with Bak Du-seong’s (1888–1963) creation of the Korean Braille system in 1926 and highlights how Bak’s enterprise inherited the King’s faith in humanity and love for the people despite the suppression of the Korean mother tongue under Japanese colonial rule. * Bak Du-seong and Hunmaengjeongeum: Bak Du-seong was born in 1888 in Gyodong-myeon, Ganghwa-gun, Incheon. From 1913 to 1936, he taught blind students at Jesaengwon, an institution established by the Japanese Government-General of Korea. Determined to enable his students to read and write in Korean, he secretly developed a braille system together with his students. On November 4, 1926, he announced the six-dot Korean Braille system, Hunmaengjeongeum.The exhibition is divided into two sections, “Breaking the Barrier of Illiteracy: Hunminjeongeum, Hangeul” and “Breaking the Barrier of Disability: Hunmaengjeongeum, Korean Braille.” The first section presents Samgang haengsildo (Illustrated Guide to the Three Bonds), which King Sejong published to edify the common people through illustrations of moral behavior. Also on display is Worin seokbo, compiled by a later king in 1459, which contains an explication of the Hunminjeongeum in Hangeul. The second section features a collection of Bak Du-seong’s own belongings, including the Hangeul Braille Chart which he developed, his handwritten journal kept from August 12, 1926 to 1954, zinc embossing plates for braille printing made by Bak himself, and the braille typewriter he personally used. Visitors will also be able to take part in a hands-on activity where they can write their names using magnetic braille blocks.In conjunction with the exhibition, the museum will host a special event titled “A Barrier-Free World Experienced Through the Five Senses” on the square in front of the building on May 15, the opening day of the exhibition, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Participants can wear special glasses to feel the everyday experience of people with visual impairments, create “Tactile Art in the Dark” while wearing blindfolds, and view photographs and paintings made by visually impaired artists. Also, a guest lecture, “From Script to Dots: A Humanities Perspective on Korean Braille,” will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the video room of the museum.The exhibition is free of charge to all visitors to the History and Culture Museum of King Sejong during the exhibition period. Visiting hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in May and from 9:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. in June and July. The center is closed on Mondays.On Saturdays and Sundays, the museum will provide, upon request, an on-site audio descriptive tour presented by a professional who will be stationed in the gallery throughout the day for visitors with visual impairments. All exhibition content has also been translated into English for international visitors. In addition, the museum has designed the exhibition to be sustainable by using modular reusable walls, thereby reducing waste by more than eighty percent.This exhibition is being held with the cooperation of the Songam Braille Library, operated by the Incheon Blind Welfare Union, as well as the National Hangeul Museum, the Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies, Seoul National University Library, and Seoul National School for the Blind for the loan of artifacts and related support.The Historic Site of King Sejong Management Office is committed to sharing King Sejong’s legacy with a wider public by utilizing various collaborative programs interweaving history, culture, and the arts.홍보물
