(국영문 동시배포) 한국 수중발굴 50년, 역사의 물살을 넘어 미래의 물결로

국가유산청 국립해양유산연구소(소장 이은석)는 오는 9월 14일(월)부터 9월 19일(토)까지 국립해양유산연구소(전남광주통합특별시 목포시)에서 ‘한국 수중발굴 50년 기념행사’를 개최한다. 연구소는 지난 반세기 바닷속에서 건져 올린 위대한 역사의 성과를 돌아보고 세계로 도약하는 미래 비전을 나누고자 ‘역사의 물살, 미래의 물결’을 공식 표어(슬로건)로 선정하고 다채로운 프로그램을 선보인다. 행사의 시작을 알리는 기념식과 특별전 개막식은 9월 14일(월) 오후 2시 국립해양유산연구소 사회교육관과 수중유산박물관에서 열린다. 1부 기념식에서는 한국 수중발굴 50년의 여정을 돌아보는 영상시사회와 특별공연, 수중발굴 발전에 헌신한 유공자 표창 등이 진행된다. 이어 2부에서는 특별전 ‘바다를 건넌 나무, 자단’ 개막식이 열린다. 이번 특별전(‘26.9.15.~’27.2.14.)에서는 신안선에서 발견된 핵심 무역품인 자단목을 중심으로, 370여 점의 유물을 통해 중세 동아시아 해상 교류의 문화상을 조명한다. * 자단목: 동남아시아와 인도 등에서 생산되는 고급 목재로 재질이 아주 단단하고, 붉은색을 띰. 9월 15일(화)에는 ‘신안 해저로(海路) 탐방’이 진행된다. 연구소가 전통 한선 제작 기법으로 온전하게 복원한 ‘조선통신사선’에 승선하여, 한국 수중고고학의 시작이 된 신안군 증도의 해저유물 매장해역을 직접 항해할 예정이다. 이 탐방에는 학술대회 국내외 발표자 및 역대 신안선 발굴 관계자, 원로학자, 현직 수중고고학자 등 50여 명의 전문가가 참여한다. 참가자들은 선상 간담회를 통해 지난 50년의 발굴 성과와 미래를 심도 있게 논의하며, 신안선 발굴 유적지 현장에서는 해상헌다례를 거행해 그 역사적 의미를 되새길 계획이다. * 헌다례: 조상과 선현 영령들께 차(茶)를 올리는 전통 다례 의식 9월 16일(수)과 9월 17일(목) 양일간은 국제학술대회를 개최한다. 이번 국제학술대회에서는 ‘바다를 건넌 나무, 자단’ 특별전과 연계하여 신안선 출수 자단목의 연구 성과를 심층 조명하고, 지난 50년의 발전을 발판 삼아 미래의 50년을 준비하는 과제를 논의한다. 첫째 날인 9월 16일(수) 오전 10시부터는 ‘신안선 자단목과 동아시아 해양교류’라는 주제로 기조 강연과 5개의 주제 발표가 진행된다. ▲ 신안선 발굴 50주년을 맞아 지난 발굴 및 연구 성과를 종합하고 앞으로의 과제를 제시하는 ‘신안선의 연구성과와 과제'(한성욱, 민족문화유산연구원) 기조 강연을 시작으로, ▲ 신안선 자단목의 수종 및 산지 연구의 중요성에 비추어 해외의 최신 자연과학 연구사례를 소개하는 ‘자단목의 수종과 산지에 관한 자연과학적 연구 동향'(장대석, 국립해양유산연구소), ▲ 자단목 표면에 남겨진 파스파 문자와 가문(家紋) 등을 분석해 다층적인 물류 관리 체계와 참여 주체를 밝히는 ‘신안선 자단목의 문자·문양과 중세 동아시아 해역교류'(정순일, 고려대학교), ▲ 문헌과 고고학적 단서를 바탕으로 인도에서 중국, 일본으로 이어지는 14세기 아시아 해역의 자단목 유통망을 추적하는 ‘신안선을 통해 본 14세기 아시아 해역의 자단목 무역에 관한 고찰-자단목에 새겨진 표식의 해석을 중심으로-‘(판지아난 范佳楠, 중국 쓰촨대학), ▲ 여러 화물주의 물건을 한 배에 함께 싣고 교역하던 14세기 동아시아 해상 무역의 특징을 바탕으로 신안선의 역사적 성격을 다각도로 조명하는 ‘무역 구조를 통해 본 신안선과 자단목'(세키 슈이치 関周一, 일본 고베여자대학), ▲ 수입된 고급 자단목의 일본 내 소비 양상과 이를 대체하기 위해 발달한 모방 칠공예 기법인 ‘자단도장(紫檀塗裝)’을 살펴보는 ‘일본의 자단 작품과 자단의 모방 기법'(나이토 사카에 內藤榮, 일본 오사카시립미술관) 발표가 이어진다. * 파스파 문자: 중국 원(元)나라 쿠빌라이 황제 때, 티베트의 승려로 황제의 스승이 된 파스파가 왕명으로 만든 몽골의 글자 둘째 날인 9월 17일(목) 오후 1시부터는 ‘한국 수중유산 조사, 앞으로 50년’ 주제로 5개의 발표가 진행된다. ▲ 지난 반세기 한국 수중발굴의 발자취를 돌아보고 앞으로의 50년을 전망하는 ‘한국 수중발굴 과거 50년, 미래 50년'(김병근, 전 국립해양유산연구소), ▲ 한국·캐나다·영국 사례 비교를 통해 우리 수중유산 관리 체계의 특징과 발전 방향을 제시하는 ‘한국 수중유산 거버넌스의 특징과 발전 방향-한국·캐나다·영국 사례 비교를 중심으로-‘(문예찬, 연세대학교), ▲ 동아시아·동남아시아가 공유한 해양사를 토대로 수중문화유산 연구 현황과 국제 협력 과제를 짚어보는 ‘동아시아·동남아시아의 공유된 해양사와 수중문화유산 연구의 현황: 미래 협력을 향하여'(기무라 준 木村 淳, 일본 도카이대학), ▲ 남중국해 북서대륙사면에서 수행된 심해고고학 조사 성과와 적용 기술을 소개하는 ‘남중국해 북서부 대륙사면 침몰선에 대한 심해고고학 기술 응용'(천촨시 陳傳緖, 중국과학원 심해과학공정연구소), ▲ 도자기에 그려진 문양을 인공지능(AI)으로 분석하는 새로운 방법을 제시한 ‘인공지능(AI)을 활용한 수중 출수 유물 연구 방법론'(신종국, 국립해양유산연구소) 발표가 있을 예정이다. 아울러 9월 17일(목)부터 9월 19일(토)까지 수중유산박물관의 관람 시간을 오후 8시까지 연장하고, 관람객이 함께 참여하는 ‘해양유산 달빛유람’도 운영한다. 연구소의 대표 사회교육 프로그램인 바다문화학교와 연계하여 ‘한국음악과 바다’를 주제로 한 강연과 융합(퓨전) 국악 공연, 창작 판소리 공연 등이 무료로 펼쳐진다. 한국수중발굴 50년 기념 행사의 자세한 내용은 국립해양유산연구소 누리집(https://www.seamuse.go.kr)을 통해 확인할 수 있다. 국가유산청 국립해양유산연구소는 이번 기념 주간을 새로운 도약의 계기로 삼아 지난 50년의 성과를 세계와 공유하고, 첨단 과학기술과 국제협력을 바탕으로 해양유산의 조사·연구·보존 역량을 강화해 미래 50년을 선도하는 세계적 해양유산 전문기관으로 발전해 나갈 것이다.The National Research Institute of Maritime Heritage (Director General Lee Eun-seok) under the Korea Heritage Service will host a series of events commemorating 50 years of underwater excavation in Korea from September 14 (Mon.) to 19 (Sat.) at the Institute in Mokpo, Jeonnam-Gwangju Special Metropolitan City. Under the official slogan “Currents of History, Waves of the Future,” the events will look back on the remarkable discoveries made in Korea’s waters over the past half-century and present a vision for the future of Korean underwater archaeology on the global stage.The anniversary program will open with a commemorative ceremony and the launch of a special exhibition at 2:00 PM on September 14 (Mon.) at the National Research Institute of Maritime Heritage’s Social Education Center and Underwater Heritage Museum. The first part will include the premiere of a video tracing 50 years of underwater excavation in Korea and a special performance, as well as awards recognizing those who have contributed to the field. The second part will open the special exhibition “Rosewood: Timber That Crossed the Sea.” On view from September 15, 2026 through February 14, 2027, the exhibition explores maritime exchange and cultural connections across medieval East Asia through rosewood as one of the main commodities recovered from the Sinan Shipwreck.On the other hand, participants will embark on the “Sinan Sea Route Expedition” on September 15 (Tue.). They will travel aboard the Joseon Tongsinsa Ship—a full-scale vessel reconstructed by the Institute using traditional Korean shipbuilding techniques—to the underwater archaeological site off Jeungdo Island in Sinan-gun, the birthplace of underwater archaeology in Korea. The expedition will bring together around 50 experts including conference speakers from Korea and abroad, former members of the Sinan Shipwreck excavation teams, senior scholars, and active underwater archaeologists. An onboard discussion will offer an opportunity to reflect on the achievements of the past 50 years and consider the future of the field. Upon reaching the Sinan Shipwreck site, participants will hold a ceremonial tea offering at sea in commemoration of its historical significance.An international conference will be held over two days on September 16 (Wed.) and 17 (Thu.) in conjunction with the special exhibition. It will highlight research on the rosewood recovered from the Sinan Shipwreck and explore the priorities for the next 50 years, drawing on the progress of the past half-century.Featured on the first day, September 16 (Wed.) are a keynote address and five presentations under the theme “The Rosewood of the Sinan Shipwreck and Maritime Exchange in East Asia”. The program will begin with ▲ “Research on the Sinan Shipwreck: Achievements and Future Tasks” (Han Seong-uk, Research Institute of National Cultural Heritage), a keynote address reviewing 50 years of excavation and research and outlining future priorities. This will be followed by ▲ “Trends in Scientific Research on the Species and Provenance of Rosewood” (Jang Dae-seok, National Research Institute of Maritime Heritage), which introduces the latest international scientific research on identifying the species and provenance of the rosewood recovered from the Sinan Shipwreck; ▲ “Inscriptions and Symbols on Rosewood from the Sinan Shipwreck and Maritime Exchange in Medieval East Asia” (Chong Soon-il, Korea University), which examines Phags-pa script, family crests, and other markings on the timber to shed light on the multilayered logistics system and the parties involved; ▲ “Rosewood Trade in 14th-Century Asian Waters as Seen Through the Sinan Shipwreck – Interpreting the Marks Carved into the Timber” (Fan Jianan, Sichuan University, China), which traces the timber’s trade network from India through China to Japan based on documentary and archaeological evidence; ▲ “The Sinan Ship and Rosewood as Viewed Through the Structure of Maritime Trade” (Seki Shuichi, Kobe Women’s University, Japan), which explores the ship’s historical character from multiple perspectives in light of the 14th-century East Asian practice of carrying cargo belonging to multiple merchants aboard a single vessel; and ▲ “Rosewood Objects and Imitation Techniques in Japan” (Naito Sakae, Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts, Japan), which examines the use of imported luxury rosewood in Japan and jadandojang (紫檀塗裝), an imitation lacquer technique developed as an alternative to the prized timber.Meanwhile, five presentations will be featured on the second day, September 17 (Thu.) under the theme “Underwater Heritage Investigation in Korea: The Next Fifty Years.” The program will include ▲ “Underwater Excavation in Korea: The Past Fifty Years and the Next Fifty” (Kim Byung-geun, former research officer at the National Research Institute of Maritime Heritage), which reviews the development of underwater excavation in Korea over the past half-century and looks ahead to the next 50 years; ▲ “Underwater Heritage Governance in Korea: Characteristics and Future Directions—A Comparison of Korea, Canada, and United Kingdom” (Moon Ye-chan, Yonsei University), which examines the distinctive features of Korea’s underwater heritage management system and explores the country’s future development through a comparison with Canada and United Kingdom; ▲ “Shared Maritime Histories and Current State of Underwater Cultural Heritage Research in East and Southeast Asia: Toward Future Cooperation” (Kimura Jun, Tokai University, Japan), which reviews the current research and priorities for international cooperation in light of the shared maritime histories of East and Southeast Asia; ▲ “Deep-Sea Archaeological Technologies Applied to Shipwrecks on the Northwestern Continental Slope of South China Sea” (Chen Chuanxu, Institute of Deep-sea Science and Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China), which introduces deep-sea archaeological investigations conducted in the region as well as the technologies used; and ▲ “An AI-Based Research Methodology for Artifacts Recovered from Underwater Sites” (Shin Jong-guk, National Research Institute of Maritime Heritage / Choi Byeol, Geunnam Information Technology), which presents a new method of using artificial intelligence to analyze decorative designs on ceramics.The Underwater Heritage Museum will remain open until 8:00 PM from September 17 (Thu.) to 19 (Sat.) for “Maritime Heritage by Moonlight,” a special evening program open to all visitors.
