(국영문 동시배포) 국가유산청, 말의 해 기념 특별전 「말, 영원의 질주」 개최

국가유산청(청장 허민)은 ㈜신세계(대표이사 박주형)와 함께 1월 9일부터 1월 25일까지 신세계백화점 본점 더 헤리티지(서울 중구)에서 말의 해를 기념해 신라 말 모양 토우, 가야 말 갑옷 등 말과 관련한 국가유산을 집중 조명한 「말, 영원의 질주」 전시를 개최한다. 이번 전시는 2026년 말의 해를 맞아 국립문화유산연구원(원장 임종덕)에서 발굴조사한 경주 쪽샘 유적 등에서 출토된 말 관련 유물의 재현품을 비롯해, 천연기념물 제주마 사진 등을 전시해 말의 모습을 다양하게 조명할 수 있도록 구성하였다. 또한, 전시 공간이 서울시 유형문화유산인 「옛 제일은행 본점」을 새 단장(리모델링)해 재개관한 ‘신세계 더 헤리티지’라서 의미를 더한다. 총 5부로 구성되는 이번 전시는 선사시대부터 현재까지 인간과 함께 달려온 동반자인 말의 질주를 발굴조사 유물 재현품과 공예품, 현대 작품, 디지털 이미지 등 다양한 자료를 통해 말의 시간과 에너지가 과거와 오늘을 지나 미래로 이어지는 모습을 시각적으로 풀어내고자 하였다. 붉은 말과 함께 열린 2026년을 상징하는 인공지능(AI) 영상을 시작으로 ▲ 1부에서는 귀엽고 친근한 이미지의 신라 말 모양 토우와 기마행렬이 새겨진 토기의 재현품을, ▲ 2부에서는 전쟁의 최전선에서 활약한 말의 역할을 보여주는 가야 말 갑옷과 말갖춤 재현품을 살펴볼 수 있다. ▲ 3부에서는 경주 쪽샘 44호분 출토 비단벌레(천연기념물)로 장식한 말다래 재현품과 국가무형유산 갓일 보유자가 제작한 갓 등을 살펴보며 말을 꾸미고 장식한 말갖춤의 미학적 면모를 이해할 수 있다. ▲ 4부에서는 어미 말과 새끼가 나란히 서 있는 모습을 담은 조형 작가 제이크 리의 작품 ‘곁에 Beside’를 통해 돌봄과 연결의 가치를 상징적으로 확인할 수 있다. ▲ 마지막 5부에서는 국가유산청과 내셔널지오그래픽 어패럴이 협업한 자연유산 포토크루가 촬영한 천연기념물 제주마 사진을 관람할 수 있다. * 토우(土偶): 사람, 동물, 사물과 같은 형상을 본떠 흙으로 만든 토제품 이번 전시는 관람 시간 내 방문하는 관람객이라면 누구나 자유롭게 무료로 관람 가능하다. * 관람 시간: (월~목) 10:30~20:00 / (금~일) 10:30~20:30 이번 전시를 통해 긴 역사에서 우리에게 단순한 이동 수단을 넘어 전장에서 동반자로 함께 한 말의 역할을 이해하고, 말을 꾸미고 치장하는 행위가 위엄과 권력의 상징이었음을 발굴조사 출토 유물을 통해 확인하는 자리가 될 것이다. 아울러 말의 힘과 에너지가 과거에 머무르지 않고, 오늘날까지 문화, 무형 그리고 자연유산을 모두 아우르는 국가유산으로 우리와 함께 살아가고 있음을 확인할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다. 국가유산청은 앞으로도 발굴조사 출토 유물의 가치를 보다 많은 국민들에게 알리고 소통할 수 있는 기회를 지속적으로 확대해 나갈 계획이다.The Korea Heritage Service (Administrator Huh Min), in collaboration with Shinsegae Co., Ltd. (CEO Park Joo-hyung), will host the special exhibition “The Horse: Galloping into Eternity”, highlighting horse-related national heritage, including Silla clay figurines (Towu) and Gaya horse armor, from January 9 to 25 at ‘The Heritage’, Shinsegae Department Store Main Branch (Jung-gu, Seoul) to mark the Year of the Horse.In celebration of the 2026 Year of the Horse, this exhibition features replicas of horse-related artifacts excavated from sites such as the Jjoksaem Tomb in Gyeongju by the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage (Director General Lim Jong-deock), affiliated with the Korea Heritage Service. Photographs of Jeju Horses, a designated Natural Monument, are also presented to shed light on the diverse facets of these animals. In addition, ‘The Heritage’ at Shinsegae, the venue of the exhibition, is housed in the newly renovated and reopened former Korea First Bank Headquarters, a Tangible Cultural Heritage site designated by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, further enhancing the significance of the exhibition. Divided into five sections, this exhibition traces the journey of the horse humanity’s companion since prehistoric times—through a diverse array of excavated replicas, traditional crafts, modern artworks, and digital imagery. It aims to visually interpret the time and energy of the horse, connecting the past and present with the future.The exhibition opens with an AI-generated video symbolizing the year 2026, the Year of the Red Horse. It is organized into five distinct sections:• Part 1: Features replicas of Silla horse-shaped clay figurines (Towu) and pottery engraved with cavalry processions, showcasing the cute and friendly imagery of horses in ancient times.• Part 2: Spotlights the role of horses at the front lines of war through replicas of Gaya horse armor and horse regalia.• Part 3: Explores the aesthetics of horse regalia, featuring a replica of a saddle flap (Maldarae) decorated with jewel beetle wings—a designated Natural Monument— excavated from Gyeongju Jjoksaem Tomb No. 44. This section also showcases Gat, traditional Korean hats created by a master of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage ‘Gat-il’ (Hat Making).• Part 4: Presents the artwork “Beside” by sculptor Jake Lee. The piece, depicting a mare and her foal standing side-by-side, symbolizes care, connection.• Part 5: Allow visitors to view a photography exhibition of Jeju Horses (Natural Monument), captured by the Natural Heritage Photo Crew in a collaboration between the Korea Heritage Service and National Geographic Apparel.*Towu (土偶, Clay Figurines): Earthenware objects or figurines crafted in the shapes of people, animals, or various objectsThe exhibition is open to all visitors free of charge during the following hours. *Visiting Hours: (Monday–Thursday) 10:30 a.m.–8:00 p.m.; (Friday–Sunday) 10:30 a.m.–8:30 p.m.This exhibition serves as an opportunity to understand, through excavated artifacts, that horses have been much more than a mere means of transportation throughout our long history. They have stood as companions on the battlefield and as symbols of dignity and power through acts of adorning and embellishing horses.Furthermore, the exhibition is expected to confirm that the strength and energy of the horse are not confined to the past.
