(국영문 동시배포) 한국-프랑스 140년 우정의 증표, 선물과 기록으로 남다

국가유산청(청장 허민) 국립고궁박물관은 행정안전부(장관 윤호중) 대통령기록관과 공동으로 6월 3일부터 8월 2일까지 박물관 2층 기획전시실(서울 종로구)에서 한국·프랑스 수교 140주년을 기념하는 특별전 「선물과 기록, 한국-프랑스 우정의 140년」을 개최한다. 이번 특별전은 한국과 프랑스에 각기 보관되어 온 1886년 조불수호통상조약(朝佛修好通商條約) 관련 문서들의 원본, 고종과 사디 카르노 프랑스 대통령(Marie François Sadi Carnot, 1837~1894)이 교환한 선물과 관련 기록, 그리고 대한민국과 프랑스 역대 대통령이 주고받은 선물과 서신 등을 통해 양국이 140년간 함께 한 우정의 역사를 종합적으로 살펴볼 수 있는 자리이다. 전시는 총 5부로 구성된다. ▲ 1부 ‘조선과 프랑스의 만남’에서는 1851년 신안군 비금도에 표류한 프랑스 고래잡이 배 나르발호 선원들의 구출을 위해 조선에 온 프랑스 외교관 몽티니가 조선 관원과 만났을 때 받아 갔던 옹기주병(프랑스 국립제작소-세브르도자박물관 소장)을 국내 최초로 공개하고, 파리외방전교회 소속 선교사들이 저술한 최초의 근대적 한국어-외국어 사전인 『한불자전 Dictionnaire Coréen-Français』 등을 전시한다. ▲ 2부 ‘조불수호통상조약의 체결과 동행의 시작’에서는 프랑스 외교사료관과 우리나라 국립중앙도서관에 각각 소장된 조불수호통상조약(朝佛修好通商條約) 문서 원본들이 처음으로 함께 공개되며, 수교 이후 양국 공사(公使) 관련 자료, 명동성당 건축을 위한 대지 매입 일지(한국교회사연구소 소장) 등 조약 체결로 선교가 자유로워지며 조선 사회에 확산된 천주교 관련 유물이 소개된다. ▲ 3부 ‘조선 국왕과 프랑스 대통령의 선물 교환’에서는 사디 카르노 대통령이 고종에게 증정한 백자 채색 살라미나 병(국립고궁박물관 소장)과 이에 대한 고종의 답례품인 청자 대접 2점(프랑스 국립제작소-세브르도자박물관 소장), 『원행을묘정리의궤』와 고려 역사서 『휘찬여사』(프랑스 국립동양어문화대학 언어문명도서관 소장), 그리고 진귀한 재료로 화분에 심긴 나무와 꽃을 재현한 공예품인 한 쌍의 반화(盤花) 복제품이 전시된다. 반화 원본은 현재 프랑스 국립기메아시아예술박물관에 소장되어 있고, 이번에 전시되는 것은 2024년 국가유산청과 아모레퍼시픽 설화수의 후원협약을 통해 국가무형유산 김영희 옥장이 제작한 복제품 두 쌍 중 한 쌍이다. ▲ 4부 ‘대한민국 임시정부와 프랑스의 연대’에서는 일제 강점기에도 이어진 한국과 프랑스의 연대를, ▲ 5부 ‘이어지는 우정, 대한민국과 프랑스’에서는 역대 대한민국 대통령들이 프랑스 대통령들로부터 받은 은제 그릇, 도자기, 소반 등(대통령기록관 소장)과 노태우, 김영삼 두 전 대통령이 프랑수아 미테랑 전 프랑스 대통령에게 선물했던 나전칠기함, 상감청자 등의 공예품(프랑수아 미테랑 기념물 박물관 소장) 등 양국 대통령이 주고받은 다양한 선물과 서한, 양국 간 교류 영상을 통해 현대 외교의 현장을 생생히 전달한다. 전시 기간 중에는 적극행정의 일환으로 특별전과 연계한 교육프로그램도 별도로 진행한다. ‘왕실문화 심층탐구 강연'(성인 대상, 7.1./7.8./7.15, 총 3회)에서는 한국과 프랑스의 외교사와 특별전 전시 유물에 대한 심화 해설을 들을 수 있고, ‘활동지와 함께 하는 전시해설'(초등학교 4∼6학년 대상, 7.4.∼8.1, 총 18회)은 초등학생들이 글로벌 전략적 동반자로서 한국과 프랑스의 관계에 대해 미래지향적으로 생각해 볼 수 있는 기회가 될 것이다. 이번 특별전은 휴관일인 매월 마지막 주 월요일을 제외한 매일 오전 9시 30분부터 오후 5시 30분까지 국립고궁박물관을 방문하는 관람객이라면 누구나 무료로 관람 가능하다. 또, 관람객의 전시 이해를 돕기 위해 전시 기간 동안 오전 11시와 오후 3시에 전시 해설(도슨트) 서비스도 운영된다. 국립고궁박물관에서의 전시가 종료된 이후, 8월 14일부터 9월 13일까지 한 달간 세종에 위치한 대통령기록관에서도 순회전시가 진행되어 특별전 공동 개최의 의의를 확대하고 지역 주민에게 문화 향유 기회를 제공할 예정이다. 국가유산청 국립고궁박물관은 이번 특별전을 계기로 앞으로도 유관기관과 지속적인 교류를 통해 왕실 유산의 전시와 활용 범위를 확대하는 적극행정을 지속할 예정이다.The National Palace Museum of Korea, under the Korea Heritage Service, in collaboration with the Presidential Archives of Korea, will present the special exhibition Gifts and Records: 140 Years of Korea–France Friendship from June 3 to August 2, 2026, at the museum’s Special Exhibition Gallery in Jongno-gu, Seoul, in celebration of the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and France.This special exhibition offers a comprehensive look at the 140-year history of friendship shared by Korea and France through documents related to the Treaty of Friendship and Commerce between Joseon and France concluded in 1886, gifts and records exchanged between King Gojong (r. 1864-1907) and French President Sadi Carnot (1837-1894), and gifts and letters exchanged between the presidents of the Republic of Korea and France.A highlight of the exhibition is the first-ever joint display of the original copies of the Treaty of Friendship and Commerce between Joseon and France, preserved respectively in the Archives of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Library of Korea. Also on view for the first time are an Onggi Wine Bottle from the collection of the National Ceramics Museum under Manufactures nationales, Sèvres & Mobilier national, France, presented to Charles de Montigny (1805-1868), French consul in Shanghai, during his visit to Joseon to rescue the crew of the French whaling ship Narval, which had drifted ashore on Bigeumdo Island in 1851; two Goryeo celadon bowls sent by King Gojong to the President of France from the collection of the Sèvres National Ceramics Museum; and the Wonhaeng eulmyo jeongni uigwe (Protocol of the Royal Procession to Hwaseong in 1795) and Huichanyeosa (Historical Book Compiling the History of the Goryeo Dynasty), both preserved in the Collections of the Bibliothèque universitaire des langues et civilisations (BULAC, Paris).Visitors will also be able to view gifts exchanged between the leaders of both countries since the establishment of the Republic of Korea. Gifts presented by French presidents to their Korean counterparts, now preserved in the Presidential Archives of Korea, reflect France’s refined craftsmanship as well as the shared history of the two countries. In addition, craftworks such as a mother-of-pearl lacquer box and an inlaid celadon piece, presented by former Presidents Roh Tae-woo (1932-2021, in office 1988-1993) and Kim Young-sam (1929-2015, in office 1993-1998) to French President François Mitterrand (1916-1996, in office 1981-1995) and now housed in the Cité des Présents-François Mitterrand, France, will be displayed, illustrating the enduring friendship between the two nations.The exhibition is organized into five sections.Section 1, “Encounter between Joseon and France,” features the Onggi Wine Bottle presented during a meeting between a French diplomat and Joseon officials in 1851, as well as the Korean-French Dictionary (Dictionnaire Coréen–Français), the first modern Korean–foreign language dictionary compiled by missionaries of the Paris Foreign Missions Society.Section 2, “The Treaty of Friendship and Commerce between Joseon and France and the Beginning of a Shared Journey,” presents treaty-related documents preserved in Korea and France, records concerning diplomatic representatives exchanged after the establishment of relations, and artifacts related to the growth of Catholicism in Joseon following the greater freedom granted to missionary activity under the treaty.Section 3, “Exchange of Gifts between the King of Joseon and the President of France,” showcases the Painted White Porcelain “Salamina” Vase presented by President Sadi Carnot to King Gojong, together with Gojong’s return gifts: two celadon bowls, Books on Rituals and Korean History, and Pair of Decorative Artificial Trees Made with Precious Materials (banhwa). The original banhwa is now housed in the Musée national des arts asiatiques–Guimet, Paris. The work on display is a replica crafted in 2024 by Kim Young-hee, a National Intangible Cultural Heritage holder in Okjang (Jade Craft), through a sponsorship agreement between the Korea Heritage Service and Amorepacific Sulwhasoo. These gifts offer a glimpse into the mutual desire of Joseon and France to promote cultural exchange and foster mutual respect.Section 4, “Solidarity between the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea and France,” explores the ties that continued even during the Japanese colonial period.Section 5, “Continuing Friendship: Korea and France,” vividly brings the world of modern diplomacy to life through gifts and letters exchanged between the presidents of the two countries—including silver vessels and porcelains—as well as video footage documenting bilateral exchanges.During the exhibition period, a range of educational programs will also be offered to enhance visitors’ understanding of the exhibition. The “In-Depth Lectures on Royal Heritage Culture” series (for adults; July 1, 8, and 15) will explore the history of diplomatic relations between Korea and France over the past 140 years, the gifts exchanged between King Gojong and President Sadi Carnot, and the significance of gifts exchanged between national leaders since the establishment of the Republic of Korea. In addition, “Guided Exhibition Tours with Activity Sheets” (for students in grades 4–6; July 4–August 1, 2026; eighteen sessions in total) will provide an opportunity for students to experience the long history shared by Korea and France, gain a better understanding of diplomacy and reflect on the future of Korea–France relations as a Global Strategic Partnership.Following its presentation at the National Palace Museum of Korea, the exhibition will travel to the Presidential Archives in Sejong City, where it will be on view from August 14 to September 13, providing residents of the Sejong region with an opportunity to experience this special exhibition. 홍보물
